Reactive Agent Lack Halts Lab Work

Once more, the chaotic management of public hospitals under administration of the Caja has raised its ugly head. This time, it has halted lab workups of body fluids needed for everything from diagnosis to determining paternity.

Microbiologists complain that they have nearly run out of reactive agents needed for working with blood, urine and other fluids, reported the leading daily paper La Nacion.

Neotropica Assesses Crucitas Mine Damage

Environmental Minister Rene Castro has let a contract to the prestigious Neotropical Foundation to assess environmental damage to the area of the controversial Las Crucitas open pit gold mine in the sprawling San Carlos canton.

The evaluation, to be finished in two weeks, is to assess damage caused by deforestation as the owner, Industrias Infinito, a Canadian subsidiary, prepared the mine site.

Lawmakers Learn Nothing from Figueres

Despite grilling from opposition lawmakers, as so often happens with congressional and parliamentary investigation committees throughout the world, they learned nothing new from ex-President Jose Figueres (1994-98).

Figueres sweat copiously and drank large quantities of water but shed no new light on the $900,000 he received for advising Alcatel on the granting of 400,000 new phone lines.

President Seeks Drug Legalization Dialogue

President Laura Chinchilla, after her Guatemalan counterpart, President Otto Perez, broached the subject in talks with El Salvador's President Mauricio Funes, said she "would not oppose" the opening of a regional dialogue about decriminalizing narcotics and other drugs.

All three Central American countries feel themselves threatened by international drug traffickers. Chinchilla also noted that in Costa Rica, the consumption of drugs is not criminalized, only production, transport and sale.

 

Comptroler Building Site of Demonstration

The destinctive glass semi-pyramidal Comptroller General's building across a street from Sabana Park was taken over briefly Tuesday night and Wednesday morning by an estimated 150 small farmers who fear that they may be evicted from their land.

The rural people sent a letter to President Laura chinchilla asking that she "guarantee that the State will put no more pressure on the disputed land." Moreover, they demanded the dismissal of Comptroller Rocio Aguilar and sub-controller Martha Acosta.
