Competition has turned into squabbling between RACSA and AMNET as both Internet servers go head-to-head in the now-open market after years of ICE-RACSA monopoly.
For some years, AMNET had to go through RACSA to serve customers until the telecommunications market was opened by law to allow this country to enter the CAFTA free trade pact. Earlier this year, AMNET gained direct Internet connection.
Specifically, RACSA accuses AMNET of telling customers that the latter has a better service and connection. RACSA is crying unfair competition and accusing AMNET of sullying their image.
Under the old system, RACSA and AMNET shared the profits 50/50, the customer being obliged to sign contracts with both. Customers holding old contracts but wanting to switch to the single AMNET billing have to visit their office to sign a new deal.
Millicom acquired AMNET in 2008.
