Relations between Costa Rica's Civil Aviation and Juan Santamaria International Airport's concessionaires and managers has not always been the fondest, but it appears that all the sturm und drang has been worth it.
The Gineva, Switzerland-based Airport Council International has rated the new facilities the third best in Latin America and the Caribbean from the point of view of passenger service.
The rating is the result of interviews ACI conducted with 350,000 passengers using more than 1650 airports in 179 countries all over the world. In Latin America, the San Jose terminal in this country is rated only behind Cancun, Mexico, and Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Rafael Mencia, director of the airport concessionaire Aeris received word of the ACI results Tuesday afternoon. This award is reason to celebrate the teamwork between the State and Aeris," he told La Nacion.
Last year more than 3 million travelers passed through the airport. Aeris has invested some $40 million in modernizing the facilities.
Aeris took over management and improvement from the facilities after Aviation Civil had stormy relations with the previous concessionaires who finally withdrew voluntarily.
