End of World Movie to Open Here

As probably all our readers know, the Mayan calendar ends abruptly at what scholars calculate is 2012 A.D. (We at this blog believe that Mayan astronomers merely ran out of space on the stone they were carving.)

Still, the end of the world makes for fun science fiction movies from Hollywood. Young Costa Rican writer-director Miguel Gomez has just finished a comedy on the theme, El Fin (The End), due to open here in late February.

It is set on the last day of earth's life as a giant asteroid hurtles toward our planet--but do not expect stunning special effects. Costa Rican-made movies are always low-budget and avoid scaring the begeebers out of you in favor of facets that action movie directors ignore--like characterization.

The film was shown recently at the Morbido film festival in Mexico. According to the entertainment blog Twitch reviewer, Todd Brown, Gomez did an initial sound mix for the film, then rushed to the airport and finished the subtitles in Mexico.

Even in this hasty, almost-finished form, Brown fell in love with it, as he had a previous Gomez work, El Sanitorio, a horror/comedy. In El Fin, two friends go on a road trip to finish up good ol' earth's last day on a good note.

Despite the rather grim subject matter, (the population of earth are fully aware that there's no way out) we consider this a must-see production. Tico films and original theater scripts tend to be upbeat in the end with only a few exceptions.

We can't wait to see how Gomez wrings a happy ending from this one -- if, indeed, he does.
