The medical tourism company PROMED will host its third annual conference April 23-25 at the five-star Intercontinental Hotel in the West San Jose suburb of Escazu. The International Medical Travel Conference will give visitors a chance for first hand inspection of private hospitals and dental clinics and a chance for face-to-face interviews with physicians.
The conference is aimed at foreign insurance company executives, employee benefit managers, health underwriters, insurance agents and third party administrators.
Medical travel has mushroomed in this country fueled by skyrocketing health care prices in other countries. Companies, for instance, have found it more feasible to send injured or sick employees to Costa Rica for first-class medical care than treating them closer to home.
Although reasonable prices are the main attraction, naturally companies and insurance firms want quality care and this country is known for this, with many specialists trained abroad in prestigious universities.
Many U.S. patients "discovered" this country's benefits first with plastic surgery in the 1970s. Later the country's fame spread rapidly for other types of surgery and then to dentistry.
The field further developed when recovery (post-operative) facilities were constructed in resort areas. Today, individuals often use small, reasonably priced and friendly bed and breakfast facilities in downtown San Jose to recover from facial plastic surgery, to allow the swelling to subside so they can return home to show off their rejuvenation.
The PROMED conference is co-sponsored by ICT, the national tourism institute.
