A new hotel planned for Guanacaste province will carry the name Bulgari, normally associated with fine jewelry and accessories for the wealthy. Owned by Marriot (which already has a five-star hotel in that province since 2009), the hotel will have 60 rooms and 30 villas.
The U.S. firm Canyon Group, known for its development of luxury hotels, will supervise the construction, estimated to cost $100 million.
It will be the first of the chain in the Americas, although the name is attached to three hotels in Milan, Italy, Bali, Indonesia and Tokyo, Japan. Another is scheduled to open in London in 2012. (Rioting in that city might cause the company to reconsider.)
Confirmation of the plans were announced separately by Tourism Minister Allan Flores and lawyer Luis Castro of the BLP Abogados law firm that represents Canyon Group.
"The Bulgari target market," commented Flores, "is the multimillionaire who buys goods related to the brand." As evidence of that, notes the newspaper La Nacion, is that the room rates start at more than $3,000 per night and can reach $4,000.
