According to figures released by the Costa Rican Chamber of Construction, the number of construction workers hired grew in the first semester of 2011 when compared to the same period in 2010. The number of new jobs registered was 2,700.
At a time when real estate is down worldwide, this is a significant gain, here in Costa Rica the sector showed no growth in 2009 or 2010, actually in both cases jobs were lost. In 2009 the loss was 12.9% and in 2010 it was 9.3%.
The Executive Director of the chamber, Randall Murillo, stated that "A 4% growth rate is weak, but significant, since it gives us a break from the negative growth of the last 2 years". The data stems from figures provided by the Costa Rica Social Health Care System for workers carrying insurance, which appears to represent about 60% of all workers.
Murillo commented that "jobs created in this sector are important, because each position represents 3 more in other activities."
