Sykes, the multinational Florida-based business outsource processing service, has opened a new center in this country and expects to hire 300 more employees. The move will bring the number of Sykes employees to 3,500.

The new center is in Hatillo, in the building that once housed Constenla y Cia. Total investment for physical facilities is some $2 million.

Two other such centers are located in Moravia and the Global Park free zone. The company is aiming at a work force at the new center of 700 workers in a year.

Sykes serves many Fortune 500 businesses in customer service, outsourcing, quality and process improvement and call centers. Company president Chuck Sykes explained to La Nacion that the company picked out the souteast suburb of Hatillo for the potential avalability of workers there.

Sykes said he hoped to find bilingual workers in the southern, eastern and western areas of the metropolitan area. He originally  established his company here in 1999 and his good experience here motivated him to open a third center.

But Danny Quiros, manager of the Market Intelligence section of Colliers, a real estate advisory firm, gave another insight into the Hatillo choice. He told La Nacion that renting in Heredia could cost as high as $18 per square meter, in Moravia it is around $12 and even less in Hatillo.

Sykes added other factors to the company choice, including infrastructure. He said the other two, older, locations were filled to capacity and his company had an opportunity to grow.

Sykes is one of 110 such service companies in the country that employ some 32,000 workers, La Nacion reported.
