As Intel electronics company goes, so goes Costa Rica. When the news was released by its Santa Clara, CA, headquarters that the worldwide company had posted its best second quarter profits ever, this country felt deep satisfaction. The firm, with its sizable operation here in Costa Rica, is a bright spot in the national export picture.

The company reported a profit of $10.8 billion over last year, a jump of 34%. It also reported a $4 billion operating income, a net income of $2.9 billion and an EPS of $.51.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini commented, "Strong demand by our corporate customers for our most advanced microprocessors helped Intel to achieve the best quarter in the company's 42-year history." He said he looked for the company to continue to see high demand for the foreseeable future.

But this was not the only good news to come out of Intel in July. The Santa Clara headquarters also announced a breakthrough in laser technology that can be applied to PCs in the future. Although fiber optics are used in larger computer operations, they have been too bulky for use in PCs.

The application, when it hits the market, will allow PCs to be far more powerful than the old copper technology currently in use.
