Lipo Chemicals Merges with Vantage |

Lipo Chemicals, Inc., with its headquarters in Patterson, NJ, has merged with Vantage Specialty Chemicals of Chicago. Lipo is incorporated in several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica. Lipo provides technology and ingredients to firms in the personal care industry.
Vantage, a specialty chemicals manufacturer, has a number of affiliated companies. The company hopes the merger will expand its access to Latin America where Lipo will continue to provide its personal care specialty to its customers.

As Intel electronics company goes, so goes Costa Rica. When the news was released by its Santa Clara, CA, headquarters that the worldwide company had posted its best second quarter profits ever, this country felt deep satisfaction. The firm, with its sizable operation here in Costa Rica, is a bright spot in the national export picture.
The company reported a profit of $10.8 billion over last year, a jump of 34%. It also reported a $4 billion operating income, a net income of $2.9 billion and an EPS of $.51.

The controversial new Arizona immigration law has drawn media attention ever since it was passed. Throughout the United States comment has been brisk and sometimes acrimonious. Now even foreign countries like Costa Rica are weighing in.
In an "amicus curiae" brief submitted to the U.S. District Court of Arizona July 21, Costa Rica has expressed concern for the civil rights of Ticos living in Arizona under the law that went into effect late last week. (The amicus curiae means literally "a friend of the court" and is essentially testimony not solicited by either party in a court case.)

NDC to Establish Operation Here |

Nitinol Devices & Component Inc. based in Fremont, CA, has announced its intention to establish an operation in one of Costa Rica's Free Trade Zone industrial parks later this year. According to an NDC press release, "the plant will produce medical guide wires that combine the company's core expertise in Nitinol processing technology with value-added extrusion, coating and assembly operations for medical device companies..."
The firm, which plans to hire 30 employees during the first year, is an example of the well-established medical-related foreign companies that have already established themselves here, mainly in industrial parks in the Central Valley that offer special tax breaks, among other advantages.

Computer pioneer Hewlett-Packard (HP) is is set to increase its operation in this country with an increase of 2,000 jobs over the next two years, the firm announced this week. The multinational giant will augment its service from a new building at the Ultrapark II free trade zone in which it has had an operation since 2002, starting with only 123 employees, and currently employs 6,500 workers.
The company uses the facility to support its offerings throughout the world, from servers and printers to the development of new software, a La Republica newspaper article reported. Despite worldwide economic uncertainties, HP is only one of a number of companies establishing or expanding in the nation, lured by an educated workforce and a stable society and government.
