Hypercom: More Tech for a Bank PDF Print E-mail

Hypercom Corporation announced that it will supply 13,000 counter-top and mobile payment terminals so that local merchants may access the largest bank in Costa Rica. The Scottsdale, Ariz, company did not reveal the exact amount of the transaction but said it was a "multi-million dollar" deal.

Banco National is the largest bank in the country in terms of asset volume ($6,661 million) with 161 offices and 4,800 employees serving some 1,500,000 customers throughout the country. This four-year roll out is believed to be one of the biggest in the country.

Frontier Reveals New Flights PDF Print E-mail

Frontier Airlines announced recently that it would make new flights into Liberia Airport, near northwestern Costa Rica's popular Pacific beach resorts, beginning February of next year.

The announcement comes on the heels of Mexicana's declaration that the beleaguered airline has cancelled flights to Costa Rica from Mexico City due to the company's having filed for bankruptcy. Mexicana's cancellations to this country were only part of a list of destinations cut off due to the company's financial woes.

Obesity Worries Health Officials PDF Print E-mail

Time was, 40 years ago, when Costa Rican health officials worried that Ticos were not getting enough to eat or that their diets did not include enough protein. Today, they worry about obesity, especially among youngsters.

It would be easy to go McDonald's bashing here, but like most societal problems it does not lend itself to villains and heroes. Certainly fast foods, imported tastes from the United States, carry their share of the blame but the whole life style of the country has changed.
