A PERSONAL REPORT-- The controversy over the entrance of U.S. anti-narcotics patrol ships in Costa Rican ports continues to produce reader response in local newspaper op-ed pages and in blogs around the world. Some of the responses seem to hearken back to the bad old days of the Cold War when the right-left political divide yawned even in this peaceful country.
Perhaps the knee-jerk reaction of some Costa Ricans who cry that Costa Rica is being “militarized” by allowing these ships to dock can be explained by an experience this reporter had in 1979 when the 42-year-old dynasty of the Somoza family was in its death throes in Nicaragua.

If a Costa Rican president had made, 30 years ago, a speech inviting space age industries to settle in Costa Rica (as President Laura Chinchilla did in her May inaugural address) likely it would have raised derisive snorts here. But Chinchilla's invitation today merits serious consideration internationally.
The difference is not only that foreign companies producing equipment unheard of 30 years ago have established branches here. Three decades ago was before the Ad Astra Rocket Company of Houston, TX, established a research center in Guanacaste province to produce a revolutionary rocket engine advanced enough to make NASA's chemical rockets obsolete.
